Space Detectives: The Castle That Fell Upward

A royal palace is falling away from its moon. The last guest checked out sixty years ago, but someone inside keeps ordering breakfast.

Panel 01 / Above Cerulean Moon

The palace falls up

At sunrise, the Moon Palace turned upside down and began falling away from Cerulean Moon. Its lakes climbed into the sky. Silver tables burst through the windows. The royal family had vanished during a coup sixty years earlier, and nobody had crossed the sealed gates since. Still, at first light every morning, room service transmitted the same order: tea, toast, one place at the eastern window, and absolutely no detectives.

Inspector Orin Pike anchored to the palace roof beside Nemi, a four-armed crystalline archivist whose body rang softly when gravity changed. Clink, a brass service robot, opened his umbrella against a storm of falling silverware. Below them, the blue moon was shrinking. Inside the palace, someone lifted a receiver and listened to them breathe.

Concierge

Tea at first light. Toast warm. One place by the window. No detectives.

Orin

Someone has been listening for sixty years.

Nemi

There is breath beneath the transmission. Slow, living, afraid.

Clink

Palace rotation increasing. Nine minutes until lunar orbit is unrecoverable.

Orin

Then we knock politely. Old houses remember manners.

Panel 02 / The breakfast trail

Tea points toward the thief

The grand hall had become a vertical canyon. Portraits hung sideways while a breakfast cart drifted toward the shattered dome, leaving a glittering trail of frozen tea. Nemi caught four cups before they escaped and held one sugar crystal to the light. Every grain leaned toward the same dark point beyond the palace walls.

In the throne room, a glass crown rested beneath a spotless bell jar. It was a perfect copy. The real crown was the palace’s gravity key, built around a sealed royal memory vault, and somebody had torn it from the throne. A voice whispered through the walls when Orin reached for the fake: ‘Please do not wake her in the dark.’

Nemi

The sugar is falling toward the missing crown. The entire palace is following it.

Orin

The crown is not treasure. It is a tow line.

Concierge

Return Her Majesty before the eastern window goes dark.

Orin

Who are you protecting?

Concierge

Breakfast is getting cold.

Nemi

That was not an answer.

Orin

It was fear.

Panel 03 / The stolen crown

Gravity follows the thief

The gravity trail ended at a masked salvage ship towing the crown toward an auction beyond lunar law. When Orin hailed it, the captain killed every exterior light and disappeared against the stars. The palace lurched after him. In the crown’s fractured center, Nemi detected a heartbeat kept impossibly slow for sixty years.

Nemi unfolded her crystalline arms into a prism. Orin aimed Cerulean Moon through her facets, and a fan of blue light revealed the hidden ship, the towing cable, and the small sleeping silhouette inside the crown. Clink planted his umbrella in the palace roof. Its canopy became a magnetic sail and pulled the detectives straight into the dark.

Captain

Stand down, Pike. The palace was empty long before you were born.

Orin

Empty rooms do not order breakfast.

Captain

The buyer wants what is asleep inside the crown. I only move the cargo.

Nemi

That cargo has a heartbeat.

Orin

Then you did not steal a castle. You kidnapped its last passenger.

Clink

Umbrella line secured. Permission to make the weather worse?

Orin

Granted.

Panel 04 / Breakfast served

The palace remembers its promise

Clink’s umbrella cable caught the salvage ship as Nemi reached into open space and rebuilt the crown around its recovered shard. Gravity turned homeward. Every loose chair in the palace chose the captain’s cockpit as down, pinning him beneath sixty years of furniture while the Moon Palace curved back toward its blue horizon.

Inside the crown, the last princess of Cerulean Moon had slept through the coup, hidden by a concierge ordered to keep breakfast ready until daylight was safe. When the palace settled into orbit, the eastern window filled with sunrise for the first time in sixty years. A young voice emerged from the crown, uncertain but awake. Orin set the old case file on the table and opened it to a blank page.

Princess

Detective... is the moon still blue?

Orin

Bluer than the stories.

Nemi

The memory vault is stable. You can wake when the palace lands.

Captain

You do not know what she is.

Orin

No. That is why she gets the chance to tell us herself.

Princess

Then set one more place by the window.

Clink

Toast preference?

Princess

Burnt at the edges. My mother always complained.
