Space Detectives: The Ghost Signal Between Stars
A distress call arrives from empty space. The caller knows Detective Sera Vale’s childhood nickname and warns her not to open locker nine alone.Panel 01 / 02:13 station time
The warning from nowhere
The night desk was quiet enough to hear Momo, the office’s round cat drone, stealing noodles one strand at a time. Then static crawled across every dark window and all twelve receivers spoke in Sera’s own exhausted voice: ‘Firefly, do not open locker nine alone. I only have eleven minutes.’
Only Sera’s grandmother had called her Firefly. The signal came from coordinates with no star, no wreck, and no recorded object larger than dust. Sera replayed it once, listening past the fear in the voice to the slow alarm beating behind it. Relay 88. A station abandoned before she was born.
JunThe source has no mass, no beacon, no ship. It is a blank place.
SeraPlay the last four seconds again.
SignalFirefly... bring Jun. Please. Do not let me miss them twice.
JunSera, that voice is yours.
SeraThen either I am lying to myself, or I am asking for help. Wake the shuttle.
Panel 02 / Relay 88
Locker nine is warm
Relay 88 turned soundlessly above a dead planet, its windows powdered with frost on the inside. Locker nine waited at the end of a corridor where the emergency lights blinked in time with Sera’s pulse. The metal door was warm. Inside lay her own badge, cracked clean through, beside a photograph of Sera, Jun, and Momo standing exactly where they stood now.
The clock in the photograph read eleven minutes ahead. Beyond their future reflections, a human hand pressed against the outer glass from empty space. Farther back, a long black shape was arriving fast enough to split the relay in half.
JunThe fracture is fresh. I can still smell the hot alloy.
SeraThat is my serial number. I am wearing its twin.
MomoPhotograph analysis: captured ten minutes and forty-two seconds from now.
JunLook at the glass. Someone is outside the station.
SeraNot outside. Between. Kill the lights and scan the reflection.
Panel 03 / Minus six minutes
The ghost is still alive
With the station dark, Jun’s phase scanner painted a silver wound across the stars. A courier ship was trapped inside it, folded between two seconds. Forty passengers floated awake in the cabin while a failing drive dragged them toward the instant Relay 88 had been built to prevent. Their distress call was not coming from far away. It was leaking backward from six minutes in the future.
The old tow field could catch the ship, but only if someone fired it before the courier returned to normal space. Sera finally understood the photograph, the broken badge, and the terror in her future voice. The warning had not created a trap. It had left them the only map through one.
CourierRelay 88, can anyone hear us? The children are awake. We cannot hold the fold.
SeraWe hear you. Your signal reached us before your ship did.
JunThe tow field wants two hundred percent power. If it slips, it takes the relay with it.
SeraRoute life support into the field. We only need air after we save them.
JunYou sound exactly like the warning.
SeraBecause I am about to become it.
Panel 04 / Case closed-ish
The future leaves a tip
The courier tore into normal space as a wall of blue fire. Relay 88 groaned, the outer glass bowed inward, and Sera held the tow control down while her badge burned against the console and cracked exactly as the photograph promised. Jun bent the ship past the station with less than a meter to spare. Forty voices returned to the radio at once.
The loop still needed its beginning. Jun took the photograph. Sera placed it and her broken badge inside locker nine, then faced the microphone with eleven minutes of oxygen left. She could hear her younger self listening on the other side of time. This time, she knew what the fear in the voice was for.
CourierDetective, how did you know where we were?
SeraYou told me tomorrow.
JunThe loop still needs the warning. Say only what you remember hearing.
SeraFirefly, do not open locker nine alone. Bring Jun. Please. Do not let me miss them twice.
MomoTransmission complete. Forty life signs stable.
SeraThen now we can breathe.
